Borderlands: Claptrap's New Robot Revolution DLC Review

Borderlands is a first-person shooter game with role-playing elements, developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games in 2009. The game features a colorful and cartoonish art style, a vast open world, and a loot system that allows players to customize their weapons and equipment. Borderlands also supports cooperative gameplay for up to four players online or locally.

Claptrap's New Robot Revolution is the fourth and final downloadable content (DLC) pack for Borderlands, released on September 28, 2010 for all platforms. The DLC was produced by Darkside Game Studios, a Canadian developer that collaborated with Gearbox Software. The DLC adds six new areas to explore, 21 new missions to complete, new enemies to fight, new characters to meet, and new achievements and trophies to unlock. The DLC also raises the level cap from 61 to 69, and adds two more skill points for each playthrough.

Plot

The DLC follows the events of The Secret Armory of General Knoxx, the third DLC for Borderlands. After the death of General Knoxx and the destruction of the Crimson Lance army, a rogue group of Claptraps, the humorous and annoying robot assistants that populate the game world, have started a revolution against their human oppressors. Led by the Interplanetary Ninja Assassin Claptrap (INAC), the Claptraps have taken over several locations in Pandora, the planet where the game takes place, and have "claptrapped" various enemies and bosses from the previous DLCs, giving them robotic enhancements and making them loyal to the revolution. The player is contacted by Patricia Tannis, an eccentric scientist who has discovered a way to stop the Claptraps, but needs the player's help to collect various items for her plan. Along the way, the player will encounter Marcus Kincaid, a greedy arms dealer who wants to profit from the chaos, and Mr. Blake, a Hyperion executive who wants to reclaim his company's property from the Claptraps.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Claptrap's New Robot Revolution is similar to that of the base game and the previous DLCs. The player can choose from four playable characters: Roland the Soldier, Lilith the Siren, Mordecai the Hunter, and Brick the Berserker. Each character has a unique skill and three skill trees that allow them to specialize in different combat styles. The player can also use various weapons and items that they find or buy from vendors. The weapons have different attributes such as damage, accuracy, fire rate, reload speed, magazine size, elemental effects, and special effects. The items include shields, grenades, class mods, and relics that provide passive bonuses or abilities.

The DLC adds new enemies such as Hyperion soldiers, claptrapped creatures and bandits, and claptrapped versions of previous bosses such as General Knoxx-Trap, Commandant Steele-Trap, Dr. Ned-Trap, and Undead Ned-Trap. The DLC also adds new challenges that reward the player with experience points and money for completing certain tasks such as killing a certain number of enemies with a specific weapon type or elemental effect. The DLC also introduces new collectibles such as oil cans, claptrap bobbleheads, 3D glasses, panties, fish in a bag, and pizzas that are required for some of Tannis' missions or for unlocking achievements and trophies.

Reception

Claptrap's New Robot Revolution received generally positive reviews from critics and players alike. The DLC was praised for its humor, content, variety, and difficulty. The DLC was also appreciated for providing more gameplay time and replay value for fans of Borderlands. However, some critics and players also noted some flaws such as technical issues, lack of innovation, recycled assets, and disappointing loot. The DLC was also criticized for not including any new weapons or equipment types or any pearlescent items (the rarest and most powerful items in the game).

The DLC has an average score of 77 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on 23 reviews from critics. On Steam, the DLC has a user score of 9 out of 10 based on 1,066 reviews. On IGN, the DLC has a score of 8.5 out of 10 based on one review from a critic and 8.1 out of 10 based on 52 reviews from users.

Conclusion

Claptrap's New Robot Revolution is a worthy addition to the Borderlands franchise, offering more fun and challenge for fans of the game. The DLC delivers more of the same gameplay that made Borderlands a success, with a humorous and absurd twist. The DLC also provides a satisfying conclusion to the game's story, setting up the stage for the sequel, Borderlands 2. However, the DLC also suffers from some minor issues that prevent it from being perfect, such as technical glitches, lack of originality, and disappointing loot. Overall, Claptrap's New Robot Revolution is a recommended purchase for anyone who enjoys Borderlands and wants more of it.
